Overview – IELTS Academic Writing Test
Understand what examiners look for with model Writing Task 1 and Task 2 examples. The Academic Writing test consists of two tasks. Both tasks deal with topics of general interest that are relevant for students preparing for undergraduate or postgraduate study, or for those applying for professional registration. Your answers must be written in a formal style.
Resources – Task 1
To complete this task, you will work with visual information, such as a chart, graph, table, diagram, process, or map. Use the information carefully to answer the questions clearly and accurately. You will need to describe, summarise, or explain the information in your own words. This could involve presenting data, describing how something works, explaining the stages of a process, or outlining the details of a plan or design.
To complete Task 1 successfully, you should:
- Write an introduction
- Give an overview (a general summary of what the data shows)
- Highlight and explain the key features, supporting them with data where necessary
Also, your response must be at least 150 words and written in full sentences (no bullet points or notes).
Resources – Task 2
For the second task, you are required to write an essay responding to a statement, argument, or problem. The topics are usually based on issues of general interest but will focus on a specific aspect of the subject. For example, instead of discussing computers in general, the task may ask you to write about the impact of computers in education.
The instructions will guide you on how to approach the essay. You may need to provide information, suggest solutions, justify an opinion, or evaluate evidence and ideas. To succeed, you should:
- Present clear, relevant arguments supported with examples from your own knowledge and experience
- Organise your essay logically, using paragraphs for each main point
- Write in an academic or semi-formal style
- In addition, produce at least 250 words
Your writing will be assessed on your ability to organise and link ideas clearly, follow standard essay-writing conventions, and use English accurately and appropriately to express your opinions.
